Cosmetic Use of Pesticides in British Columbia

Currently British Columbia requires companies applying pesticides to use the pesticides as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program. In IPM programs, all available information and treatment methods are considered in order to prevent and manage pest populations effectively, economically and in an environmentally sound manner.

In the August 25th 2009 Speech from the Throne, the Government of British Columbia committed to consult British Columbians on “new statutory protections to further safeguard the environment from cosmetic chemical pesticides.”

The advertised consultation period is now closed. Thank you for all the comments and responses that have been submitted.

The Ministry of Environment has carefully reviewed every response received during the consultation. Those responses have been compiled into a summary report so those who are interested can see the full range of submissions received.

* Click here (PDF/361 KB) to read the summary of comments received.
* Click here (PDF/91 KB) to read the background information and discussion topics.

Next Steps in the Consultation Process

All comments have been reviewed by the ministry and are being considered in determining ways to address the non-essential use of pesticides in British Columbia.
